Welcome from the Head

St Martin’s is a magical place – from the moment you step through the front door our vibrant community welcomes you like a warm embrace. Leading this school is a privilege and a joy every day.

We might be small, but we deliver big in terms of opportunities and results. Small classes, high pupil-staff ratio and personalised learning are the bedrock of our success. We have an enviable reputation for academic attainment, especially in the 11+ grammar school entrance test, but more than anything, it is our family atmosphere which sets us apart.

Ours is a warm and nurturing environment, where children can be curious and creative, explore ideas, and are inspired by talented and dedicated teachers. While we place a firm emphasis on academic achievement, we know children learn best when they are happy and fulfilled.

We are known as ‘the happy family school’, which is apt in so many ways. We have been in the hands of the same family since 1976, with our current proprietors having all worked in the school and educated their children here too.

In keeping with our school motto ‘Thorough’, we expect a lot from our pupils – including kindness, respect, and hard work; we ask them to take on responsibilities, to show initiative, and to act as role models for younger pupils. But we give them so much in return. At St Martin’s School, every pupil is valued as an individual, supported to develop their talents, and empowered to seize opportunities and achieve their potential.

Personally, St Martins has been a big part of my own life for 9 years now. Firstly, as a class teacher, then deputy head and now as headteacher - with my daughter currently attending here too. It is such a unique place in terms of its heart and spirit, I am immensely proud of the school community we have built together, and that I am lucky enough to enjoy being part of every day!
